Why business owners get impostor syndrome
Business owners and entrepreneurs get impostor syndrome because
- Feel insecure and out of their depth going it alone
- Made a massive change going from a situation they were not happy in and feel like they have been put in a whole new world that is scary
- Not having the backing of a big brand or the results you have created while working for someone else
- Undertaken specific training for this new role in your life and you don’t think people will believe you know your stuff as you don’t have a big background in it.
Whatever your reason for having impostor syndrome, there are simple steps you can take to overcome impostor syndrome.
Firstly, let me tell you about my own journey with impostor syndrome and why these 2 simple steps helped me overcome impostor syndrome.
My own journey with impostor syndrome
Starting my entrepreneurial journey in 2011, I was struggling hugely with impostor syndrome. I kept thinking
– Who would want to hire a nobody like me
– I am not an expert
– Other people can do the job better than me
– I am just taking peoples money and bluffing my way through it when I talk to these serious business owner
As you can see my head was filled with doubt and fears. These doubts and fears would be following me about all day and keep me up at night. Feeling that I could not carry on this way, I started to research a way to get out of these feelings.
Then I came across this idea of finding your super specific niche. Not just the niche of people I wanted to serve, but the niche of my experience and skill I wanted to offer the world.
Tools I Use To Overcome Impostor Syndrome
Going old school, I used the good old SWOT analysis and PEST analysis to try and figure out my own niche.
Just for anyone who doesn’t know what a SWOT and PEST analysis is, here is a quick explanation of what they are.
SWOT analysis is looking at the internal and external opportunities to you. The SWOT analysis headings provide a good framework for reviewing strategy, position and direction of a company or any other idea.
PEST analysis is the second step you need to take in looking at the external opportunities to you. PEST analysis is a useful tool for understanding market growth or decline, and as such the position, potential and direction for a business.
Using the 2 tools, I found that I was at my happiest when I am helping people achieve more with their business. Due to my personal circumstances I was best doing it from home using my laptop and the tools available online. This helped in a big way to remove any fears I once had and overcome impostor syndrome.
Using the 2 tools above, what would work best for you?
